Keeping Westminster moving in the cold weather
The cold weather can cause patches of ice or frost which are dangerous for cars on the road and for people walking on the pavements, and to tackle this the council has a stockpile of grit salt as well as six gritting vehicles fitted with GPS units, six smaller gritters for footpaths, 60 manual spreaders and nearly 200 grit bins which are regularly being topped up. We have 500 tonnes of grit salt readily available.
Please note that due to the large area of the city, important public places and routes such as near hospitals and train stations are prioritised for gritting. Hilly areas, major bus routes, subway steps, footbridges and areas outside elderly people’s homes are also high priorities.
The council monitors forecasts four times a day and members of staff are on constant standby. To find out more about what the council does to keep the roads safe, click here.
