City of Westminster

Roads and Pathways

The City Council takes care of the maintenance of much of the footway and highway in Westminster.  The links on this page provide information on some of these maintenance services and an opportunity to report any problems you may encounter

  • Drain Cleaning Schedule

The Council's policy is to clean all 14,000 drains in the city at least once per year.

  • Pavements

We look after 420 miles of footways. Help us to keep them in good condition by reporting any potholes, defects in the pavements or street furniture.

  • Report a street problem

Please use this service to tell us about any problem on the streets.

  • Safer Streets Initiative

The City of Westminster has an obligation to all pedestrians to maintain a safe and free passage on the public highway.

  • Street cleansing services

Keeping a 24hr city clean is a 24hr job. The Clean Streets waste collection, street cleansing and recycling contract is our strategy to do just that.

  • Street lights

We look after street lights in Westminster, including illuminated street furniture like traffic signs, illuminated bollards and belisha beacons.

  • Street monitoring

This page provides a more detailed look at SEM Contract Monitoring and the methods of inspection.

  • Streetworks

Most streetworks activity in Westminster is carried out by utility companies.

  • Traffic lights

TfL Street Management Division is responsible for traffic lights and signals on the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN) and Westminster City Council has responsibility for the remaining network.

  • Trees

Our Tree Section manages all Council-owned trees in parks, squares, open spaces, streets, schools, cemeteries and properties administered by the City Council.

  • Winter and Gritting Service

Westminster provides a winter service (1 November to 31 March) to prevent or minimise disruption to pedestrians and vehicles in the event of freezing weather and/or snow.
