Many people get frustrated, upset or annoyed at seeing so many roads and pavements in Westminster being dug up. Most of this activity is undertaken by utlility companies investing or repairing the infrastructure - such as sewers, electricity network, gas pipes, telecommunciations - which is under our streets. Whilst every effort is aimed at co-ordinating and scehduling works to minimise disruption, there are many urgent jobs which the utlity companies have to carry out at short notice.
All maintenance and investment work to the street, including works carried out on behalf of Westminster, requires a permit to work and Westminster co-ordinates the issue of these.
Transport for London (TfL) collates infomration about all the works in London. You can view all the activity on Westminster streets here via the TfL London Works pages.
We have also produced a list of Frequently Asked Questions and a glossary on this site that we hope will be helpful.
