School Travel Plans

As part of a country-wide Government initiative, Westminster City Council is working with all schools in the City to produce School Travel Plans (STPs).

STPs aim to encourage healthier, sustainable travel on the journey to and from school - ie walking, cycling and public transport use - and away from private car trips and the 'school run'. They set out a number of practical steps and measures which will encourage and promote sustainable and healthy modes of transport.

STPs are documents which are produced by schools in response to their own needs and issues, with benefits that go beyond the school gates:

  • Less congestion and pollution
  • Improved travel awareness and road user skills
  • Healthier and more active school community
  • A safer environment for walking and cycling
  • Improved independence and responsibility among students

A School Travel Plan is a whole school project which can be linked to the curriculum and address a range of issues around school travel, from environmental education, to health benefits, from skills and safety training and school-based activities to streetscape measures.

Schools work in partnership with the School Travel Plan Advisor at the Council who provides support, advice, resources and guidance as well as input where needed.
