What is congestion charging?

When Does It Operate?

The congestion charging scheme commenced on 17th February 2003 and will affect drivers entering or travelling within the London zone between 7am - 6pm Monday to Friday. Drivers will have to pay a daily charge of £8. To view a map showing the boundary of the charging zone please click on the publication below.

Why Does the Scheme Exist?

In February 2002 the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, announced his intentions to proceed with a congestion charging scheme for central London (run by Transport for London).

How Does It Work?

If your journey takes you into the charging zone (all roads inside the inner ring road) you must either pre-pay the £8 daily charge or pay it before 10pm that day. Between 10pm and midnight the charge increases to £10 to encourage prompt payment.A pay next day facility is also available to users.

The system is controlled using a database of car registration numbers and a network of number plate-reading cameras around and in the zone.
