A successful event which celebrated our participation in the UoW Career Development Centre Mentoring Scheme. The scheme was developed in light of the lack of formal universal mentoring opportunities targeted at the professional and personal development needs of all students, regardless of their ethnicity or stage of academic training.

This year’s scheme saw 12 enthusiastic students paired with mentors who were human resources, legal, I.T, management consultancy, accountancy and local government professionals from the public and private sectors.  The feedback from both mentors and mentees has been very positive; we have heard accounts of students securing work experience and gaining unprecedented access to a range of professionals within some of the UK’s leading businesses.  All mentees valued having an industry contact with which to discuss their career ideas, mentors enjoyed developing their own mentoring skills and mentoring pairs have decided to informally continue their relationships beyond the closing of this year’s scheme.

Mentors and Mentees both gave accounts of their experience and highlighted how their relationships have made a positively impact. The event was followed by a networking session with other mentors and representatives from other organisations.  As a result of the success of this year’s mentoring scheme, we are planning to expand the scheme next year and will therefore be looking to recruit additional mentors.
