Special Constables

A new team of Special Constables (MSC) have started walking the beat in Soho. Over thirty new volunteer police officers started patrolling in May 2010 and have already contributed significantly to making the streets safer. Between May and July they:

  • performed over 700 hours of duty
  • stop and searched 72 people
  • dealt with 108 emergency calls
  • made 14 arrests
  • conducted visits to over 30 licensed premises in the area.

As well as having a strong presence during the day, the team patrols in Soho on busy Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and is supported by regular police colleagues, working on foot, on police mountain bikes, in vehicles and working with other specialist teams.  With a remit to tackle crime and disorder whilst providing visible reassurance to the local community, 'the Specials’ are making their presence felt.

“I was very impressed with the energy and dedication displayed by these volunteers who demonstrated a real commitment to making Soho a safer place to live, work and visit," said West End Ward Councillor, Jonathan Glanz.
