Mega fiction book sale now on
Wed 13 November - Sun 24 November
Hardbacks 50p each or 3 for £1; paperbacks 30p each or 5 for £1. (Non-fiction books, CDs and Chinese books are also available for sale in the library saleroom).
The majority of us in the UK and US now live in suburbs. But without a commonly agreed definition of what a suburb is, TV, music and novels fill the gap, think – Mad Men, Terry and June, the Monkees Pleasant Valley Sunday, the Members’ Sound of the Suburbs and JG Ballard and John Updike.
Result: suburbia is seen as homogenous and boring.
This talk goes beyond suburban stereotypes which construct it as the domain of net curtains’n’gnomes in the UK and happy smiling " Hi honey, I’m home" nuclear families with station-wagons in the US.
Rupa Huq, columnist, Labour politician, senior lecturer in Sociology at Kingston University and author of 'Making Sense of Suburbia through Popular Culture and On the Edge: the contested cultures of English suburbia' will explore the way we need to reimagine suburbia.
Light refreshments served. Please book by contacting the library on firstname.lastname@example.org
