Joe Innes is a handsome London based songwriter and storyteller who plays melody driven anti-pop-folk tunes like Jeffrey Lewis or The Mountain Goats. After like, three years of playing around London on his own and writing a whole load of songs that were never properly released, he traded half of his rather large comic book collection in order to record at The House of Strange, a place that has played host to the likes of Noah and the Whale, Mumford and Sons and Summer Camp.”

Wednesday 29 February, 6.30 - 8.00pm at Westminster Reference Library
Ronald will demonstrate, through the arts (visual arts, literature, music, film, comedy, and more), how it is a fundamental human need to pursue the mystery that is the negation of everything; in so doing, he will touch upon “nothing” in history, religion and philosophy.
Despite, or perhaps because of the mystery of “nothing”, artists have seen it as the ultimate challenge. After all, if anything can be represented, why not “nothing”?

Anais Mitchell – Live at Westminster Reference Library
Wednesday 15 February
Anais Mitchell plays a special solo show previewing songs from 'Young Man In America', the follow-up album to the hugely acclaimed 'Hadestown'. She also discusses the making of the record in an audience Q&A with journalist and author Nick Coleman.
Anais Mitchell plays a very special solo acoustic show in the intimate reading room of The Westminster Reference Library, where she will be previewing songs from, and discussing the making of, her brand new album 'Young Man In America'.
'Young Man In America' is the follow-up to her critically beloved folk opera 'Hadestown', which received sensational reviews and landed Mitchell on numerous ‘Best of 2010’ lists in both the national and international press.
Switching gears, Mitchell returns here to a more traditional solo record, but those familiar with Hadestown will hear its overtones in Young Man. It’s an epic, sprawling tale with characters leaping from the verses as they would from the pages of a novel.
In keeping with this literary spirit, journalist and author Nick Coleman will interview Anais and invite questions from the audience.
Coleman's upcoming book "The Train in the Night" - an account of his struggle with sudden hearing loss and a personal reflection on how we hear and feel music - will be published on February 2nd by Jonathan Cape.
