Standards of Acceptable Use of the Internet

As well as abiding by the law and you must also adhere to the Westminster Libraries and Archives standards of acceptable use when using computers in the libraries and archives. You should be aware that they are public places and that use of the Internet with the library's equipment is not necessarily confidential.

You must not
  1. Continue to use the Internet facilities beyond the end of your appointed timeslot, or after library staff have asked you to terminate their use.

  2. Tamper, delete, add to, modify or in any other way interfere with the installation, equipment and software provided. Where access to any site is restricted by the need for additional software such as plug-ins this should be reported to staff. They will notify the Libraries ICT Development Team who will investigate whether or not it is possible for the software to be installed.

  3. View pornography or other offensive and illegal material, or transmit obscene, racist or otherwise illegal materials.

  4. Infringe copyright by making unauthorised copies of protected information or software, or make unlawful use of printed information obtained using the library's equipment.

  5. Engage in advertising, canvassing or similar activities of a commercial or political nature involving mass-mailings.

  6. Hack and gain unauthorised access to any other computer or network.

  7. Create computer viruses, or knowingly disseminate viruses or hoax virus messages.

  8. The above are examples only. A member of staff may deem other forms of behaviour to be unacceptable.
Failure to comply with the standards outlined will result in staff intervention. Customers who persist in unacceptable forms of behaviour will be temporarily or permanently excluded from using the service.
