FAQ for kids@libraries

How can I join the library?
Come in with a parent or guardian and you can join straight away, or get an application form and bring it into the library once your parent or guardian has signed it.
When is my library open?
All libraries are open after school and on Saturdays, and some are open on Sundays too. The exact times vary, so check your local library's opening hours.
What can I borrow from the library?
You can borrow books, story tapes, CDs & DVDs (with the appropriate certificate for your age group).
How many can I borrow, and how long can I keep them?
You can borrow up to 20 items at a time, for up to 3 weeks. You can phone (24 hour renewals line: 020 7641 1400), use the website or come into the library to renew them for another 3 weeks, as long as nobody else is waiting for them.
Do I have to pay anything if I bring them back late?
Not if you are under 15, but we do like you to bring things back on time in case somebody else is waiting for them.
Can I take them back to another library?
Yes - you can return items to any public library in Westminster.
Can I get books from another library?
Yes you can - just ask a member of staff.
Can I borrow from the adult library?
Yes, but only the books are free - you'll have to pay if you want to borrow CDs or DVDs.
Are there any special events or activities in the library?
Yes, there's lots going on, especially in the summer holidays when we have our Summer Reading Challenge, which is free to join - you could win a great prize! Check the main Westminster Libraries News & Events page, and also the main Children's page.
Are there computers to use in the children's library?
Yes, you can look up information, use CD ROMs and surf the net. It's free, but you may have to book a time in advance.
Can I get help with my homework?
Yes, take a look at our Homework Help page. There are homework collections, homework clubs, and the Webtastic list of homework links.
What other libraries can I use?
There are large reference & information collections at Marylebone Information Service and Westminster Reference Library. Westminster Music Library is upstairs in Victoria Library, and has a large collection of sheet music and scores. Westminster City Archives has a great collection of local history material.
