Sport at the Stowe Club
Playing football for the Pineapple
Generations of young people in the Harrow Road area have benefited from membership of the Stowe Club. The club enjoyed the patronage of Stowe School in Buckingham, and every year boys from the group were taken on a summer camp in the school's grounds. When it opened in Marylebone in 1927, the youth group took a former pub called The Pineapple as its premises, and was henceforth also known as the Pineapple Club.
One of the main draws for young people were the diverse range of sporting activities on offer. The club fielded a formidable football team, and in 1980 they won the under-17s British Championship. Among the winning side was a young John Barnes, who would later go on to play for England.
Stowe Club members have enjoyed visits from several VIPs over the years, including Brazilian footballer Pelé in 1983 and, as seen in this photograph, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh on 12 December 1962.
