10.1 Parish Records

The City of Westminster Archives Centre holds the records of the ten civil parishes which were amalgamated in 1900 to form the City of Westminster. Half of these constituent parishes are ancient parishes, that is:
  • St Clement Danes
  • St Margaret
  • St Martin-in-the-Fields
  • St Mary le Strand
  • Liberty of the Rolls
  • Precinct of the Savoy

The other parishes, with their foundation dates are as follows:

  • St Paul, Covent Garden (1645)
  • St Anne, Soho (1678)
  • St James, Piccadilly (1685)
  • St John the Evangelist, Smith Square (1724)
  • St George, Hanover Square (1725)

In addition, the records of the civil parishes of St Marylebone and Paddington (incorporated into the new City of Westminster in 1965) are held. The civil parish records cover the administration of a wide range of activities such as the collection of rates, poor relief, the policing functions of the watch and parish constables, the maintenance of public health and the provision of lighting, paving and cleansing, baths and wash-houses and libraries. The records of parish Boards of Guardians and poor law unions having jurisdiction in the Westminster area are held at London Metropolitan Archives.
