Many people came from the Caribbean after World War II to help rebuild Britain. There was a shortage of labour and, during the late 1940s and 1950s, London Transport and the NHS actively recruited workers from the West Indies and West Africa. It is estimated that over 125,000 people settled in Britain between 1945 and 1958. [From a private collection]
