Westminster Boating Base - winners

For the past 33 years, children and young people in Westminster have set sail on the River Thames from Westminster Boating Base. The boating base is a charity for young people teaching sailing, powerboating, kayaking and canoeing.

There is a sense of community at the centre and many of the young people become instructors at the centre and across the country. The venue is available to hire for corporate functions and wedding receptions and the profits are used the fund the centre.

The club was recently awarded the prestigious British Canoeing Union accreditation ‘Top Centre’ for its coaching and training opportunities, involving young people in decision making and strong links with local schools and other clubs.

Samba Street Soccer - highly commended

Samba Street Soccer helps young people to develop their social and sporting skills whilst giving them a sense of community and pride.

In the past two years, 60 boys and girls from Samba have been recognised by pro-club academies and invited to take part in trials. As a result, 12 have been signed by clubs including Fulham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester. Head coach and founder, Andrew Amers-Morrison won the regional finals for a Pride of Britain award in recognition of his outstanding work with underprivileged children.

Westminster Warriors Basketball Club - highly commended

Based at Moberly Sports Centre, Westminster Warriors have worked with young people to develop their sporting talent since 1987. During this time they have evolved from a small club to a major national league player.

The club has developed many players to US scholarship and professional levels and is the only club in the UK to have developed five senior men’s England international players. Last year they won the National Male Under 18 National Championships. Their overall aim is to nurture a sense of responsibility in all players and club members so they may become productive and positive members of the community.
