Active School Award

Hallfield Primary School - winner

The school has a dedicated team of staff who tirelessly run a variety of daily sports clubs including active morning skipping, keep fit, dance and multi-sports. There are ten after-school sports clubs and there are always a variety of children taking part in different games and activities.

Other initiatives include bike ability lessons to help children be safe and active outside of school, lunchtime clubs, breakfast club including skipping and dance and a before school netball club. The teachers encourage children to join clubs outside of school and provide information on how to do this.

"The school do an amazing job, reflected in the children's enthusiasm and wellbeing."

The school held a World Cup competition to coincide with the real World Cup and supported Sports Relief by doing a ‘Hallfield Mile’ around the playground. The school also learnt and took part in this year’s Big Dance. Peer mentors organise games at lunchtime and the school collects Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers.

St. Mary Magdalene CE Primary School - highly commended

The school ensures that every pupil has access to three hours of PE a week including two hours in the weekly curriculum. The school works with local coaches to ensure a variety of activities are delivered to each Key Stage such as golf lesions for Year 6, daily 10-minute desk workouts and after-school sports clubs every evening.

The impact of the three-hour offer can be seen as club numbers have increased and pupils have continued to take part in activities outside of class time. Teams have taken part in Westminster sports competitions and made it to the Inner London Netball championships last year.

The three hour offer has maintained the health and wellbeing of the school while introducing students to new and diverse sports.

The Grey Coat Hospital - highly commended

The Grey Coat Hospital is well on its way to offering students three hours of PE and school sport each week. This is offered through curriculum time and also a number of lunchtime and after school clubs. The staff work tirelessly to provide such a vast range of activities for their students on a daily basis.

Last year, the school introduced an activity diary for Year 7 students that monitors their involvement in physical activity not only at school but in their day to day activities such as walking to school, after school clubs and weekend sport. The diaries were checked by the PE staff on a regular basis and students are educated on how exercising regularly is a health benefit.

This summer the school held a Health and Fitness Day to inspire girls to lead a healthy and active lifestyle and to experience various activities that are available at school and within the community. During the day, pupils raised over £1,700 for the British Heart Foundation in a jump rope.

This year the school offers 25 lunchtime and after-school clubs and has set up a Year 7 sports' diary to encourage pupils to take part in sports/activities for an extra 80 minutes per week.
