Active Resident Award

Nominations for the 2011 Active Awards are now open. Don't forget to nominate someone special.

Active Resident, Derek Peel
Derek Peel, Fernhead Rovers - winner

Derek founded local football team, Fernhead Rovers, in 2008 with the help of his wife and children with the aim of involving parents as well as children and other members of the community.

Derek works hard to develop the grassroots club and its players, creating new teams including a new mixed team for the under 8s, finding new leagues for them to play in and looking for sponsors. In the past two years, the club has grown to 70 players who have won seven tournaments and been runners-up in a further five.

" He is a really remarkable local resident. His energy and enthusiasm have to be seen to be belived. He is never daunted by any problem."

Keen to involve local people, Derek has set up a committee that makes decisions on the running of the club. He also relies on five volunteers to coach the teams, and makes sure they receive professional development through the ActiveWestminster Mark.

The club has players from all walks of life and helps children to socialise with people of different ages. The club is a family effort and is also supported by local councillors.

Lou Myers - highly commended

Lou Myers, 82, runs all over the world and has just come back from the 100km Del Passatore race over the Appenine mountains in Italy, which he completed in 15 hours. He ran to raise money for the UCLH cancer centre after being treated there this year. Running has helped Lou through his illness physically and mentally and he runs two to three big races a year.

Lou trains three times a week at Jubilee Hall in Covent Garden where he is known for giving advice on training and encouraging other people to run.

Mary Amayo, Kyu Yo Bu Shin - highly commended

Mary devotes her spare time to organising and running activities for young people and their families in Westbourne, Harrow Road and Queen’s Park through Kyu Yo Bu Shin.

After running the London Marathon in 2001, Mary set up a running club for young people to train for the 5k mini marathon in partnership with the Moberly Sports Centre. As a result, 48 people in her club enter the mini marathon every year and once they are 17, Mary helps them train to become volunteers. Shde has also set up a youth committee who make decisions about how the activities are run.

She combines the training with football sessions at Academy Sport and also runs karate, cycling and yogalates sessions.

Mary’s latest venture is cycling sessions for people aged 6 to 65 who have never ridden before. She is working towards a cycle training UK qualification to become an accredited instructor.
