Handyperson Scheme

Scope of the Service

The handyperson scheme is a free service available to owner occupiers and tenants in Westminster who are over 60 or in receipt of a disability allowance. The service undertakes the following types of work for eligible customers:

  • Minor repairs to defective stairs and floors
  • Minor Plumbing jobs
  • Replacing broken window or door furniture
  • Re-fixing loose carpet
  • Replacing light bulbs, plugs and fuses
  • Small areas of tiling
  • Fitting/replacing hand rails
  • Re-hanging/adjusting doors
  • Fitting grab rails
  • Minor repairs to access paths and steps (not communal)

The handyperson can only undertake a job if it can be carried out in ½ a day so this will help to assess whether a requested job can be accepted or not. Any material costs over £50 will have to be paid by the client, the first £50 will be free.

The following works are not eligible under this scheme:

  • Internal or external decoration
  • Gardening
  • Any work to a gas appliance or supply
  • Repairs to or supply of household appliances

Eligible Persons

Persons who meet the following criteria qualify for the service:

  • Residents of Westminster
  • Live in private sector, RSL, or CityWest Homes property
  • Have the authority to authorise the proposed work
  • Be aged 60 or over or be in receipt of a disability allowance of any kind
