Disabled facilities grant

If you or someone living in your property is disabled you may qualify for a disabled facilities grant towards the cost of providing adaptations to enable the disabled person to continue to live there.

What is a disabled facilities grant available for?

The disabled facilities grant is available for a range of works needed to help a disabled person to remain living more independently in their home.

The maximum grant available is £25,000. It is granted for the following improvements;

  • To make it easier to get in and out of the dwelling by, for example, widening doors and installing ramps.
  • To ensure the safety of the disabled person and other occupants.
  • By making access easier to the living room.
  • By providing or improving access to the bedroom, living room, kitchen, toilet, washbasin, bath and/or shower facilities; for example, by installing a stair lift or providing a downstairs bathroom.
  • By improving or providing a heating system which is suitable to the needs of the disabled person.
  • By adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use.
  • By improving access and movement around the home to enable the disabled person to care for another person who lives in the property, such as a spouse, child or another person for whom the disabled person cares.
Who is eligible for this grant?

This grant is available to owner occupiers and tenants, however certain conditions apply. This grant is means-tested (unless the disabled person is a child) and you may have a contribution to make towards the cost of the works, depending on your financial circumstances.

Note - If you are a City Council tenant the Council will carry out whatever works are needed (or move you to a more suitable home) and you will not be expected to apply for a means-tested grant. Similar arrangements are in place for most housing association tenants.

How do I apply for this grant?
