Why do Children and Community Services have to be involved?

Mother and children

The Children Act 1989 introduced a number of regulations to ensure the welfare of children, particularly when they are looked after by someone other than their own families.

Children and Community Services have a legal duty to ensure that the welfare of privately fostered children in Westminster is being safeguarded. This includes making sure they are:

  • safe and well looked after
  • healthy
  • receiving a proper education
  • being encouraged to reach their full potential
  • keeping in touch with people who are important to them
  • living with someone who helps them value their culture and sense of identity
  • properly supported when they become independent.
