Specialist housing programme
Changes to improve care homes and specialist housing for older people
In September 2012, we consulted with the public about proposed changes to improve specialist housing for older people in Westminster. 75% of respondents agreed with our proposals which have now been agreed by Westminster City Council, NHS Central London Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS West London Clinical Commissioning Group (formerly NHS Westminster).
The Westminster care homes which will be affected by the changes are:
- Athlone House
- Garside House
- Butterworth Centre
- Westmead and Carlton Dene.
Why are we making these changes?
Through improving and building new care homes and extra care housing (independent flats with access to 24 hour care) we will:
- Improve the standard of accommodation and provide ensuite bathrooms for every resident.
- Provide accommodation which can support people as their needs change so they can stay in their home and not have to move if they become more frail.
- Have more care homes in Westminster to allow more people to benefit from being cared for close to their friends and families’.
As well as improving care homes and providing more extra care housing we are planning to appoint a new care provider in our care homes who will begin providing care in 2014.
When will the changes happen?
| Identify additional new sites for new care homes and extra care housing | Spring/Summer 2013 |
| Site design including resident and stakeholder input | Summer/Autumn 2013 |
| First new site construction begins | 2014 |
| Consult with residents and next of kin who will be directly affected by any changes to their care home and any move to another care home | Summer/Autumn 2014 |
| First new care home opens | 2015 |
