Equipment and Adaptations
Examples of equipment and adaptations that can help you remain independent in your own home include:
- Toileting and bathroom equipment such as commodes, bath seats and bath lifts;
- Seating and bedroom equipment such as bed and chair raisers;
- Mobility equipment such as walking sticks, walking frames and hoists;
- Fitting a stair lift;
- Replacing a bath with a walk in shower;
- Adapting your home for wheelchair use (e.g. widening of doors); and
- Equipment to support people with a sensory impairment, such as special lighting or home hearing loop system.
How do I get it?
You can buy simple items of equipment from local shops.
Or you may be eligible for an initial assessment of your needs which will involve a visit from an occupational therapist or other social care staff.
If after your assessment, you are eligible for equipment, you may be given a prescription. You or your representative can take your prescription directly to a local accredited shop and get the items.
In some circumstances, community equipment will be delivered to your home by our supplier, Medequip.
People with more complex needs may be eligible for adaptations to their home. An occupational therapist will carry out an assessment to see if you are eligible and draw up a detailed recommendation of your needs.
Leaflets with more information can be downloaded at the end of this page.
Who do I contact?
Call us on 020 7641 1175 to get further information or to request an assessment of your needs. You will be asked some general questions about your situation and where you live. The assessment process will also be explained to you.
Do I have to pay?
If you choose to buy simple community equipment yourself, you will be responsible for the costs of whatever you decide to buy.
If after your assessment you are eligible for equipment and minor adaptations, these will normally be provided free of charge. If you are given a prescription for community equipment you can upgrade to a model of your choice but you will need to "top up" the difference in price.
Alternatively, you may be able to receive a direct payment.
Whether you need to contribute to the cost of a major home adaptation will depend on whether you are a council tenant, Housing Association tenant, or owner occupier / private tenant.
