Big city, big clean up

We are working hard to keep Westminster’s streets clean and tidy throughout the year. In 2003 our efforts were recognised when we achieved the title Britain's Cleanest City, and we are continuing to build on this success.
But to keep the streets clean, we need everyone to help and be responsible with their own rubbish. That’s why we’re running our Big City Big Clean Up programme, and supporting The Big Tidy Up.
The Big Tidy Up
The Big Tidy Up is England’s biggest litter pick. You can join a tidy up near you, or organise your own – you’ll be sent a free clean up kit with everything you need to get started.
As part of Recycle Week, on 23rd June Westminster’s schools will be joining The Big Tidy Up. Children from across the city will walk from their schools to Cathedral Piazza, picking up litter on the way. When they reach the piazza they will be able to dispose of their litter responsibly, including recycling whatever they can.
Big City Big Clean Up
Litter can be a major health and environmental problem. In Westminster:
• 26,000 tonnes of litter bin and street waste are collected from the streets every year
• 65% (17,000 tonnes) of our street waste is from litter on the ground.
We are committed to making sure our streets stay clean, but everyone has a part to play . You can help by remembering to:
• put all your litter (including food waste) in a bin or recycling bin
• if you can't find a bin, take your litter home or back to the office with you
• dispose of cigarette butts in ashtrays
• report any litter problems on 020 7641 2000 (our dedicated Environmental Action Line).
You can also download a range of free litter information sheets and publications from Keep Britain Tidy
