City of Westminster

Street cleansing services

Westminster's streets are regularly swept and washed to maintain a high standard of cleanliness across the city 24-7.

Keeping our streets clean and safe is a priority. But in the current economic climate, we have had to make some changes as our funding from the government has been reduced. We have sought to minimise the impact of those changes on the front line.

Special Cleansing Services

In addition to the 300 street sweepers who operate in Westminster, 24 hours a day, we employ a number of other specialist vehicles to keep the city's streets clean.

Primarily on our major thoroughfares, the mechanical street cleansing fleet consists of a combination of motorised pavement sweepers and larger road vehicles. These vehicles are included in both the scheduled daily work and in response to your reports of street cleansing issues, operating both day and night.

Special Cleansing Services

Westminster has some unique problems which often mean that many streets need regular washing, including areas with a large concentration of pubs, cafes and fast food outlets, as well as the problems associated with a large homeless population.

The Street Cleansing service additionally operates a number of other vehicles and pieces of equipment, including small pavement flushers and larger vehicles that wash the road, three different styles of litter bin, and cage vehicles for removing the recognisable green bags used by Westminster's sweepers. We also have walk-behind machines capable of vacuuming difficult items of litter between pavement cracks, such as cigarette butts.
