City of Westminster

Why use Westminster?

Westminster provides an economical, green, high quality commercial waste service.

Competitive Pricing

Our prices are extremely competitive compared to other operators and the UK waste management industry in general. Our service is run on a not-for-profit basis. Any revenue generated is put back into Westminster services. Apart from serving Westminster businesses we can assist you in finding a UK national waste management solution if you are part of a larger chain of businesses.

 Zero waste to landfill

By choosing Westminster your general waste will not be sent to landfill sites as with other operators. We are the able to offer you a zero waste to landfill solution. Landfilled waste generates methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas. In addition to this waste in landfills never degrades due to the lack of oxygen and the dense compaction. It does however generate leachate which can pollute groundwater. Instead Westminster uses general waste to generate power at the SELCHP energy recovery facility in Deptford. This generates enough electricity for 50,000 London homes. The energy contained in 1 bag of waste is sufficient for 7 showers. In addition any residues left after the energy from waste process are used as aggregates in road building.

Westminster uses only local waste management facilities hence limiting ‘waste mileage’, fuel use and contributing towards the local economy. Our recycling services provide an environmentally friendly solution for recyclable materials.

Comply with legislation

Contrary to other operators, by using Westminster you automatically comply with the Pre Treatment Regulations for commercial waste since your waste is collected as part of the municipal waste stream. Westminster does not dispose of waste to landfill. This ensures you will be compliant with waste legislation. Westminster operates its waste services in complete compliance with local, national and European waste requirements.

Extensive experience

Westminster’s experience in waste management dates back to 1965 when the present City of Westminster was formed. Until 1987 waste collection and street cleansing were performed by an in-house department but after 1987 these tasks have been outsourced to private industry. Contracts for the collection of waste, recycling and cleansing of streets were awarded in 1987 to MRS, 1995 to Onyx UK and 2003 to Veolia Environmental Services (formerly Onyx UK). Our new contract with Veolia Environmental Services, which started in September 2010, will continue to deliver Clean Streets as well as green and value for money environmental services.Currently we are proud to serve over 35,000 Westminster businesses as well as a resident population of over 200,000. In a year we collect around 195,000 tonnes of waste and recycling. This weighs the same as 42763 double-decker busses. Westminster has a market share of over 60% of the commercial waste market collecting around 110,000 tonnes of waste and recycling from local businesses. The other 40% is collected through private operators.
