Composting your food waste

Home composting requires hardly any effort and is suitable for everyone - whether you are a seasoned gardener or a novice, or if you have a large garden or a window box.

To home compost all you need is a composting bin, plenty of kitchen or garden waste and you are ready to go!

By making your own compost at home, you can reduce the amount of rubbish you produce and improve the environment in your own back garden.

Discounted compost bins

To buy a composter call 0844 571 4444 or order online at www.westminster.getcomposting.com. Westminster residents receive a discount, with the bins starting at only £15, which are supplied with complete instructions.

What can I compost?
  • Fruit scraps and vegetable peelings
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Lawn trimmings and leaves
  • Weeds (but not weeds like bindweed which are poisonous)
  • Vegetarian pet droppings (like hamster/rabbit droppings)
  • Garden prunings
  • Egg shells (crushed)
  • Dead flowers
  • Leaves (small amounts)
  • Shredded paper
  • Scrunched up newspaper, loo rolls, cardboard
  • Sawdust (small amounts)

The following items should not be composted:
  • Dog and cat droppings
  • Raw meat and fish
  • Cooked food waste
  • Coal ash
  • Prunings with thorns
  • Thick woody materials
  • Nappies
  • Plastic
  • Glass
  • Metal
