How to keep your noise down

One person's small gathering is another's rave and everyone has different tolerance levels when it comes to noise.

Complete silence in a city is unrealistic but there are simple ways to avoid disturbing those around you.

1. Parties

party hatWhen planning a party let your neighbours know or consider inviting them along. If your neighbours are aware of what's going on, they are less likely to mind. When guests are leaving remind them that others live in your area. Remember that later it gets, the quieter your music should be. If there is a complaint about your party, we will pay you a visit.

2. Music and TV

undefinedAlthough you may have the best speakers on the market, your neighbours probably don't want to know. Make sure that the speakers are away from the wall and, if possible, raised off the floor. If you can hear your music in another room, your neighbours probably can too.

3. Around and about the house

hammer and nailIt's difficult to find enough hours in the day to fit everything in but when it comes to vacuuming the house or doing DIY consider the time and make sure that it's not too late (or too early) in the day. To avoid complaints ensure your washing machine is properly balanced and has finished it's cycle by 9 pm at the latest.

4. Animals

ihitchcLeaving animals on their own is sometimes inevitable, but it does mean that they can get lonely and cause a nuisance to neighbours. Avoid leaving your dog on their own for too long and make sure that there are plenty of toys to keep them occupied during the day. DEFRA has produced a leaflet on practical ways to reduce your dogs barking.

5. Alarms

undefinedIf your alarm goes off when you're away from the house, it can cause a problem to those in the area. Register your alarm to make sure that a keyholder can be contacted. Make sure that your alarm is maintained regularly to ensure that it doesn't go off accidentally.
