Planning Permission

4 Merchant Sq

Anyone who wishes to carry out work on buildings or land may be required to, firstly, secure planning permission.  Planning permission is necessary for a wide range of development, including relatively minor alterations that may affect the appearance or use of buildings and you may need to apply for one or more consents.

The Planning Portal offers general advice on planning matters, interactive tools, mini guides to common projects, together with fee and volume calculators.  You can also make your application online.

Please note a high proportion of Westminster is designated as Conservation Areas and restrictions apply.  You can check online if you property is a Listed Building or in a Conservation Area.

  • Planning Permission: erecting a new building, extending or altering the appearance of an existing building, changing the use of a building or land, or part of a building.
  • Listed Building Consent: altering the character or appearance of a listed building, externally or internally.
  • Conservation Area Consent: demolition of most or all of an unlisted building that is situated inside a Conservation area.
  • Advertisement Consent: displaying a new advertisement or sign.
  • Work to Trees
  • If you are carrying out new building work, you will probably have to comply with Building Regulations.
