Parks and gardens

 Welcome to Westminster Parks Service

The service manages all of the City of Westminster's Parks, Gardens, Open Spaces and cemeteries.  The Parks and service covers both the client and contractor who manage the service in partnership. 

The Client group manages 109 sites across the City of Westminster from Queens Park Gardens and St. Johns Wood Church Grounds in the north to Victoria Embankment Gardens and Pimlico Gardens in the South. Of these 109 sites 56 are Parks, Gardens or Open Spaces. The remaining sites are ones where we manage the horticultural element on behalf of other council departments.

Green Flag Awards

Westminster's parks, gardens, open spaces and cemeteries have over the years been consistent winners in the Green Flag Award scheme organised by Keep Britain Tidy Group.  The parks and cemeteries were awarded 18 Green Flags (15 parks and 3 cemeteries) in the 2009/10 entry on 23 July 2009.  The service has also won awards the London Garden Squares Competition organised by The London Garden Squares Society.

Royal Parks

It is worth noting that the Royal Parks  e.g. St Jame's Park, Hyde Park etc are managed by a separate entity  - the Royal Parks Agency  (click on the link to visit Royal Parks Website).

 Management of Parks and Gardens and Cemeteries

The gardens and cemteries are managed by a Clientside group and a Grounds maintenance contractor - currently Continental Landscapes Ltd. Wesminster's parks, gardens and open spaces are governed by the Pulic Open Spaces Byelaws.

Cemeteries

The Parks Service also manages Westminster's 3 cemeteries which are located outside the borough. For more information please click on the individual links to visit the website.

Hanging Baskets

The Parks Service also administers the 'Hanging Basket Sponsorship Scheme.  Hanging  flower baskets on lamp columns always brightens up the city's streets and greenery scene.  Streets filled with bright flowers and lush greenery are not only nicer to live and work in but they're better for business too. Holding Events in the Park

Westminster parks, gardens and open spaces have been used by local groups such as Residents and Community Associations to hold events for the local communities (Fun Days, Garden Parties etc.) or for filming activities.  There is a nominal charge for these types of event.
