Section 20
Section 20 was a residual part of the London Building Acts (Amendments) Act 1939 which dealt with fire safety in tall or large cube buildings. Section 20 was repealed by The Building (Repeal of Provisions of Local Acts) Regulations 2012 with effect from 9th January 2013.
The effect of this repeal is that applications to the Local Authority for consent are no longer necessary and that any conditions imposed in previous consents cease to have effect from 9th January 2013.
If you intend to remove fire safety provisions that were installed into a building because of its Section 20 status, it is advisable to discuss the proposed removal with the local Fire Authority, as there may be implications under the RRO.
To find out if a building in Westminster was previously controlled under Section 20, enter the address as a search in the Building Control applications register. Previous applications having the suffix "OTH20" indicate it was Section 20.
