Making Buildings Accessible
Access to the Built Environment
There are roughly 9,800 residents aged 18 or over who have a moderate to severe impairment in the borough of Westminster. Approximately 1,300 residents under 59 are visually impaired and around 2,500 residents aged under 59 are hearing impaired. Other residents may have mobility impairments, and these figures may increase given Westminster's large visiting population.
Access should not be just the minimum standard needed to comply with the Building Regulations, but should provide as fully as possible for the needs of all who will be usingĀ buildings.
The City of Westminster is represented within Westminster Action Network on Disability (WAND) and through its Building Control and Planning functions aims to improve accessibility to the built environment.
