Healthy and Sustainable Schools
Healthy and Sustainable Schools

All Westminster schools are invited to participate in our first ever Healthy and Sustainable Schools Celebration Event!! This event will take place on Friday, 9th July 2010 from 10:00am – 2:00pm at Westminster Council House.

On this day Westminster schools will come together to celebrate their achievements in becoming a healthy and more sustainable school during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Schools are encouraged to tell the story of how they achieved a Healthy or Sustainable Schools status by either displaying materials, such as photos or a scrap book, or presenting their information as a poem, dance or piece of drama on the day.  All Westminster schools are invited to participate even if they do not have a Healthy or Sustainable status or award, as this will be a great day to be inspired and share best practice!

If your school would like to participate, email Jade Hall at jhall@westminster.gov.uk by Friday 2nd July 2010.

Summer 2010 - Eco-Team Picnics
picnic

Throughout the Summer term we will be offering school Eco-teams a chance to get together with other schools by holding eco-team picnics in local parks. These events will be an opportunity for teachers and pupils from different Westminster schools to meet and talk about environmental projects in their schools, share ideas and have some fun by taking part in an environmental activity.

Previous Events

February 2010 - Westminster Student Climate Summit

On the heels of the international Copenhagen Climate Summit in December 2009, the Sustainable Schools programme at Westminster City Council held its own United Nations style Westminster Student Climate Summit in early February this year.

Over 75 students from eight Westminster schools participated on the day.  Each school sent 10 students to the summit to represent a developed or developing country, such as Tanzania, USA, France, Bangladesh, France and China amongst others.

Led by either a ‘Prime Minister’ or ‘President’, each nation made presentations at the summit about how climate change will affect their country.  The highlight of the event was an active and lively student debate where pupils discussed and voted on different strategies to tackle climate change globally.

The goal of this event was to raise pupil awareness about climate change from a global perspective, while honing debating skills at the same time. Rosemarie MacQueen, Chief Officer of the Go Green Programme at Westminster Council, said: "Westminster Council is doing all it can to take the lead on reducing our carbon footprint and tackling climate change and therefore it's wonderful to see the students taking this issue so seriously."
