Go Green Neighbourhoods: A Low Carbon Zone
In 2009, the Westminster Carbon Alliance was successful in getting funding from the Mayor’s office to turn Queen’s Park into a Low Carbon Zone. This is one of 10 such pilot zones in London (pictured right) to receive funding for this scheme, which is a community based approach to carbon reduction. Eventually, the scheme will be rolled out within and beyond London.
The package of carbon saving measures for the Queen Park Low Carbon Zone will include:
- Upgrading the community heating system to a combine heat and power plant.
- The provision of loft and wall insulation and energy efficiency measures to hundreds of properties in the south of the ward.
- Training and employment opportunities in the low carbon economy, where possible, to Westminster residents
- Community engagement initiatives.
The aim will be to reduce the carbon footprint of the neighbourhood in the short term by 29% by 2012, and by 60% by 2025. As the project develops, more news will be posted here and on the main GLA website. So, watch this space!
