Food Standards Agency
The FSA is an independent Government department whose remit is to protect the public's health and consumer interests in relation to food. The FSA oversees local authority enforcement activities for food law. It sets and monitors standards and audits local authorities' activities to ensure enforcement arrangements are proportionate, consistent and transparent.
The FSA also takes an active role in co-ordinating food safety in partnership with local authorities. One example is the Food Alerts system which let local authorities and consumers know about problems associated with food and, in some cases, provide details of specific action to be taken.
