Guidance for Sustainable Refurbishment

Home energy use is responsible for 27% of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions which contribute to climate change. The refurbishment of existing buildings provides opportunities to significantly improve the energy efficiency of these buildings and reduce fossil fuel consumption and reduce occupants' fuel bills. The aim of this guidance is to help identify the opportunities that exist and point out the ways improvements can be made. References to more detailed guidance are given for those who wish to make further investigations.

A Holistic Approach

Energy efficiency is most effectively achieved when an integrated approach is taken to all aspects of a buildings performance. Therefore this guidance covers a range of issues:

• Insulation of floors, walls and roofs;
• Window and door improvements for insulation and draught proofing;
• Draught proofing and other measures to reduce air infiltration;
• Ventilation by controlled and energy efficient methods, and
• Heating and hot water system replacement

Many of the works described are controlled by the Building Regulations in England and Wales, and further guidance is available from your local Building Control Department on the Regulation requirements.
