As a Children’s Trust and public body, there is a statutory requirement to consult with children and young people under the Children's Act 2004. The City Council has continued to develop an innovative range of consultation methods to ensure the views of children and young people (CYP) in Westminster are not only heard but effectively used to shape the delivery of services.
The Children and Young People's Online Survey is an innovate and interactive survey gathering children's and young people's views on the services they use across the three borough's Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster.
Along with other formats of consultation and engagement with children and young people, this survey is aimed at widening access and increasing participation across the City. The survey is based around the five Every Child Matters agenda themes: be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, making a positive contribution and economic well being. We have also developed a range of consultation methods specifically for children with special educational needs.
The online survey will go live on 7th March 2012 and will close on 27th April 2012. Depending on the level of participation, we may extend the closing date.
There will be two surveys aimed at two age groups respectively; 9-12 year olds and 13-18 year olds. Pupils in Yr 5,6 & 7 will access the survey at school with the supervision of their teacher(s). Pupils in Yr 8,9,10 & 11 will either access the survey at school or have the option of completing the survey at school or at home. All responses are anonymous and individual children cannot be identified. Completed data can only be accessed by nominated officers within the City Council. The survey will comprise of approximately 60 interactive questions centred around their health & wellbeing, perceptions and personal interests. In addition to the online survey, workshops and focus groups with young people and parents will be set up (as required) to capture views.
Once the survey is closed, the data will be analysed and an overall evaluation report will be produced. We will publish the results on this webpage. Key issues from the survey will help to shape policy implementation, service design and delivery. Due to the large number of reports it is anticipated that individual school reports will be available by early July 2012.
Participants of the survey will have the opportunity to enter a free prize draw. We have a number of great prizes including an E-Reader, book vouchers and Amazon Voucher. The closing date for entries is 11th May 2012. Entries are limited to those who participated in the survey. Winners of the prize draw will be announced in May 2012.

Previously, Westminster schools participated in the national TellUs 4 survey. The TellUs survey was undertaken across England by Ofsted in Spring 2007, 2008 and 2009 to ask children and young people from years 6, 8 and 10 for their views about their local area. Ofsted carried out the TellUs survey in order to ensure that the first-hand views of children and young people were taken into account as part of each local authority’s inspection process, and to provide data to compare at a national level. You can view Westminster's results for Tellus 4 below.
Over 400 young people participated in our online survey this year. The survey was anonymous and asked about their experiences at home, school and their local communities. A summary paper was written outlining the findings and some of the key issues raised. You can download a copy of the paper in the publications section below.
