Extended Services

Extended Services in schools are part of a long term school improvement programme that offers a range of services and activities, often beyond the school day, to help meet the needs of children, young people, their families and the wider community.

At it's heart is the recognition that children's well-being and high educational standards go hand in hand and that these additional services contribute to improving children and young people's skills, confidence, behaviour, health and achievement.

By 2010 the Government expects all schools to offer access to extended services including:

  • access to childcare 8am-6pm,five days a week, all year round
  • a varied menu of activities beyond the school day including study support, arts, drama, music and sports
  • swift and easy referral to specialist health and social care services
  • parenting support programmes including family learning
  • community access, where possible to IT, sports and arts facilities plus adult learning programmes
