City of Westminster

Welcome from Alison Cathcart

Alison Cathcart

I hope you find our website helpful and informative.  Our service is steeped in history.  Civil registration began in 1837 and the elements traditionally associated with register offices - namely births, deaths and marriages - have largely remained unchanged.  However, in more recent years we have embraced new services.  For example, since September 1995, couples have been able to choose from a range of approved venues in which to have their wedding ceremony.

Here in Westminster, we currently have over 120 fabulous venues ranging from top class and world-famous hotels, grand stately homes, exclusive clubs and even palaces such as Banqueting House and the Palace of Westminster (House of Commons).   Citizenship ceremonies were introduced in 2004, civil partnership ceremonies in 2005 and the Nationality Checking Service in 2006.

Our expanding service is adapting to meet the needs of our customers and I hope you find our service to be welcoming, friendly, professional and efficient.

I welcome your feedback on the register office website and would like to hear about your experience of using our services.
