Sikhism in Westminster
The essence of the Sikh Faith is the worship and praise of One God. Sikhism preaches a message of devotion and remembrance of God at all times, truthful living, hard work and sharing with society and denounces superstitions and blind rituals. Guru Nanak, the first Sikh spiritual teacher, started to preach the message of equality of all men and women just over 500 years ago.
Sikhism is open to all through the teachings of its 10 Gurus enshrined in the Sikh Holy Scripture, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Today there are over 20 million Sikhs worldwide the 6th largest world religion. Sikhs first came to Britain in the 19th century and the first Sikh Gurdwara (place of worship) was established in 1908. Today there are about 600,000 Sikhs in the UK many of them wear the distinctive Sikh turban. Sikhs pray daily for the well being of all humanity.
