Community Computers

WESTMINSTER'S DIGITAL INCLUSION FRAMEWORK WINS NATIONAL IT AWARD
Westminster's Digital Inclusion Framework has won the 'Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility in IT' category in the Corporate IT Forum awards. Community Computers was the cornerstone for the Digital Inclusion Framework.
Irene McWilliams, Partnership Development Officer and David Wilde, CIO are pictured receiving the award on 9th March 2011.
The Community Computers scheme has reached its target ahead of schedule and successfully distributed 449 computers to 96 charities and 120 individuals between May 2009 and to date. The Scheme is ongoing and is dependant on computers being available for recycling.
The Community Computers scheme is part of Westminster City Council's Living City programme, to make Westminster a place where everyone, from residents and business owners to tourists and commuters, can live, work, thrive and prosper.
The council's computers need upgrading every three to four years as they become too old to run major systems and become too expensive to maintain. However, they are still suitable for internet use and to run office software and are sufficient to meet the needs of Westminster's voluntary groups.
The Council's redundant computers will be security checked and cleaned of data before being loaded with MS Office 2007 software and offered for reuse to eligible volunteer groups or individuals.
Eligible groups must be a registered charity and be able to show how their service or activity meets the needs of people living, working or studying in Westminster.
The Scheme has been extended to Westminster residents on low income or disability allowance. If you are interested in obtaining a computer please complete the application form below, email communitycomputers@westminster.gov.uk or ring 020 7641 6293 for more details.
"Having a computer has become an essential part of any successful organisation but at a cost of several hundred pounds a new computer can seem like an expensive luxury to many volunteer groups.
So I'm delighted that hundreds of our redundant computers will now be put to good use and help our volunteer groups continue the vital work they do across the city."
Cllr Melvyn Caplan, Cabinet Member, Finance
