Camp Site Licences

Licence summary

If you allow your land to be used as a camping site by the public for more than 42 days consecutively - or 60 days in a year - you require a licence from the Licensing Authority issued under the provisions of the Public Health Act 1936.

Conditions may be attached to a licence.

There are exceptions for organisations that hold camping exemption certificates.

Eligibility Criteria

A Licence is only required if the site is used by the public for more than forty-two consecutive days or for more than sixty days in any consecutive twelve months.

No fee is payable

It should be noted that the use of the land for a camping site for more than twenty-eight days in the total of any calendar year will give rise to the need to obtain Planning Permission.

Application Evaluation Process

When an application is made it will be deemed to be made unconditionally unless the Licensing Authority give notice that the application is refused or conditions are attached.

Will Tacit Consent Apply?

Yes - If your application is unopposed.  This means that you will be able to act as though your application is granted if you have not heard from the local authority by the end of the target completion period.  The target completion period will be 30 calendar days from the date the application is receeved by the licensing authority.

Register

A public register is available to view at the Council's Offices during normal office hours.  To make an appointment to view the register please contact the Licensing Service on 020 7641 8549 or alternatively email generallicensing@westminster.gov.uk.

Failed Application or Licence Holder Redress

Please contact the Licensing Authority in the first instance.

If an applicant is refused a licence they may appeal to the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court, 70 Horseferry Road, London SW1P 2AX.

Consumer Complaint

We would always advise that in the event of a complaint the first contact is made with the trader by you - preferably in the form a letter (with proof of delivery). If that has not worked, if you are located in the UK, Consumer Direct will give you advice. From outside the UK contact the UK European Consumer Centre.

If there is a concern about noise, pollution, etc please contact Westminster City Council's Environmental Action Line on 020 7641 2000 (24 hrs) or email environmentalactionline@westminster.gov.uk.  Also should any person has a complaint relating to a licensed premises or suspect a premises is operating without the required licence please contact the Council's Licensing Inspectors on 020 7641 3385 or email premiseslicensinginspectorate@westminster.gov.uk.
