Energy Saving Tips

Every household can adopt eight easy habits to save money and energy.   These habits also help lower the UK’s carbon emissions and help prevent climate change.

8 Habits to Save Energy and Money

  1. Switch off appliances from standby - this can save the average household £37 a year.

  2. Unplug chargers when not in use - chargers left plugged in across the UK unnecessarily waste over £60 million a year. They are also responsible for a quarter of a million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, which contributes to climate change.

  3. Switch off lights when leaving rooms - if no one is using the room for more than 10 minutes, switch the lights off.

  4. Switch to energy saving bulbs - these bulbs last up to 10 times longer than regular bulbs. They can save you around £40 over the lifetime of the bulb.

  5. Wash clothes at lower temperatures - you can save money and use 40% less energy by washing your clothes at 30C instead of 40C.

  6. Fix dripping taps - taps that drip hot water are especically expensive in terms of water costs and water heating costs.  Attending to drips now helps save water, energy and money.

  7. Turn the thermostat down - save 10% on your central heating bill by simply turning the thermostat down.

  8. Boil enough rather than too much - boiling a full kettle to make one or two cups of tea is an uncessary waste of time, electricity and money.  So next time you make a cup of tea, consider only using what you need.
