‘Misbehave and lose Council Tax benefits’ council says

Westminster City Council is consulting on whether future payments of council tax benefit should be tied to certain levels of behaviour or other conditions around a person’s individual circumstances.

The needs of pedestrians, parents with buggies and wheelchair users will be prioritised by Westminster City Council as part of a new approach to street markings, which should also see a reduction in the number of drivers getting a parking ticket from January 2012.

Parking in Westminster will be free during Boxing Day Tube Strikes

With tube strikes set to take place the capital on one of the busiest shopping days of the year free parking will be offered by Westminster Council.

Cabinet member for parking and transport Cllr Lee Rowley said: “Boxing Day is one of the busiest shopping days of the year and Westminster City Council has already put plans in place to help shoppers get access to central London as free parking will be available in bays and on single yellow lines.

Simon Callow donates specialist collection to Westminster Reference Library

Actor Simon Callow has donated almost 1000 of his own books – including hundreds of specialist performing arts titles – to Westminster Reference Library this week.

The stage and screen actor, who has appeared in films including Four Weddings and a Funeral and Shakespeare in Love and is currently starring in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the West End’s Arts Theatre in Soho, visited the reference library on Thursday 22 December to view his new books ‘in situ’ at the site.

Tri-borough councils set to improve lives with Community Budgets pilot

Plans to revolutionise the way government works to improve people’s lives have moved a step closer with the announcement of a new Community Budget pilot for the tri-borough area of Westminster, Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) and Kensington and Chelsea (K&C).

The tri-borough programme to share services between the councils is already paving the way in public sector innovation and today’s (21 December) announcement by the Department for Communities and Local Government will potentially allow the councils and partners to bring about a further step change under a new Whole-Place Community Budget scheme.
