Record carnival clean-up

Westminster Council cleans the streets after the Notting Hill Carnival

More than 100 tonnes of waste has been cleared up by Westminster City Council during Notting Hill Carnival weekend - involving an army of 170 cleaners and  60 vehicles which swept into action .

And the council completed its clean-up in a record 3hrs 16 mins - a full 25 mins quicker than last year  to ensure all traces of the 1 million revellers  were removed  early this morning (Tuesday 31 August).

More than 100 tonnes of waste will be cleared up by Westminster City Council during Notting Hill Carnival weekend - involving an army of 170 cleaners and 50 vehicles sweeping into action the moment the event closes each day.

And the council is aiming to smash its existing 3hr and 41mins record of completing it's final sweep through which takes place from midnight Monday to ensure all traces of the expected 1 million revellers are removed - and its roads are reopened early Tuesday.

Schools in Westminster have achieved some of their best ever GCSE results this year.

Cllr Nickie Aiken, Westminster Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "This year's GCSE results are a credit to the hard work and commitment that Westminster's students and school staff put in all year round. Thanks to their drive, determination and dedication, I am delighted to confirm that our schools have achieved some of their best ever results and they deserve to be richly congratulated for their efforts."

Sisters sentenced to 100 hours of unpaid work for housing benefit scam

Two sisters have been both sentenced to 100 hours of unpaid community work after producing false documents in a housing benefit scam.

Interpreter Sohelia Bahador, 40, from Senior Street on the Warwick estate tried to cheat Westminster Council of £11,500 by claiming housing benefit for rent on a flat which she in fact owned. 

Westminster recycling initiative brought to businesses in Marylebone

Recycle Move

Businesses in Marylebone could save more than £30,000 collectively by signing up to a new Westminster City Council recycling scheme. 

After the success of a trial in Mayfair, Westminster City Council has expanded its new environmental initiative and hopes to encourage small businesses to increase the amount of waste they recycle.
