Author visit brings children to Mayfair library

Local author Frances Lynn will be visiting Mayfair library in Westminster this week to read to children from her latest novel 'Crushed'.

A group of sixty pupils from St George's Hanover Square School will hear an extract from Frances's book on Friday (14/03/08). The children will also be given the opportunity to vote on a title for her next children's book.

Critics have described 'Crushed' as a fun, stirring saga of family life, following the story of two very different twin sisters.

Frances was born in Paddington and grew up in nearby Bayswater. Before writing novels she worked as a journalist and film critic, writing for the Evening Standard and a range of magazines including Harpers & Queen, Tatler and Time Out.

Westminster City Council's Director of Libraries, David Ruse, said:

'It is wonderful that authors like Frances Lynn come to Mayfair library to read to local children.

'Mayfair, like all libraries in Westminster, is an important community facility and has done extremely well in encouraging children to visit it.

'In an age when computer games and television are popular children's activities, it is becoming more and more important for children to enjoy spending time reading and learning.'

Other events organised for children at Mayfair library include 'Voices from the community' where community members come and read stories to local children to help spur their interest in reading. A local builder even visited recently to read to children from a 'Bob the builder' book. There are also weekly children's clubs ranging from chess, help with homework, quizzes and a reading group called 'chatterbooks'.

Additionally, a popular under-fives group, in which parents bring young children to sing songs and play with baby books and toys, ensures that children become familiar with the library and reading from a very young age. This is also a valuable opportunity for parents to meet together and be involved in the community.
