Greener markets

We are working on a number of initiatives to help cut emissions and single use plastic use at our markets.

To do our bit towards Westminster’s Net-Zero vision and climate action plan, the Markets Team is embracing innovative change to help cut emissions and reduce single use plastics at our markets.

Paper bags

We have partnered with Raze to fund, design, and give away sustainabe, reusable bags to traders. The bags are funded by eco-friendly and environmentally conscious brands, who pay for the advertisement space on one side, and our markets are promoted on the other. This allows each reusable bags to be provided to market traders and shoppers for free, replacing the need for cheap single-use plastic bags.

Each bag:

  • offsets 100% of carbon that they produce during the manufacturing process.
  • is made from eco-friendly Kraft paper
  • is water resistant
  • uses non-toxic inks
  • can hold 10kg of shopping

Rewards

To drive conscious consumerism beyond our street markets, the bags have an incentivised recycling scheme. Scanning the bag before use allows the owner to collect points and rewards that can be redeemed with the sustainable brands on the Raze app.

Simply scan, carry, earn and spend.

Rollout

To begin the rollout and show our commitment to a greener borough, the Markets Team will completely fund the first batch of reusable bags on Church Street Market in early 2023. If you are a local Westminster business that would like to know more about how you can use the bag’s advertising space, then please contact the Team at [email protected]
