Under 5s & libraries

Children are welcome to join the library from birth and, as you can see, there is plenty going on for under 5s.

We understand that children are noisy (and sometimes messy), so don’t worry too much about being quiet - we love to see young children enjoying our libraries and always make allowances for their enthusiasm!
 

Sessions for Under 5s

Bookstart

Bookstart works through locally based organisations to give three free packs of books to babies and children 3 years and under with guidance materials for parents and carers. More about Bookstart and how to get your child's free books.
 

Babies, toddlers and books

• Babies and toddlers learn to speak and increase their vocabulary when they are exposed to stories, rhymes and songs.
• Reading to children helps them to learn communication and language skills.
• Babies and toddlers can be introduced to new experiences and situations through books.
• Reading to babies and toddlers sets a pattern for when they are older, so that they will grow up believing that reading is an enjoyable experience
