26.1 Local history material

There are classified and author catalogues of books and pamphlets (see Section 1 Printed books and pamphlets) which are catalogued according to a modified Dewey classification scheme.

A general information index is available which includes references to newspaper articles, books and pamphlets. Entries for persons, places and subjects are interfiled.

Enquiries: Answers to postal enquiries.

Illustrations: In books and pamphlets (see Section 1 books and pamphlets).

Prints index: Covering photographs and prints and drawings in the prints collection. There is a local classification scheme for prints and cuttings.

Local Acts of Parliament: Chronological list and subject index.

Theatre programmes: Index to twelve scrapbooks containing programmes, 1880's-1939, and 17 volumes of programmes, 1860-1938, in the Theatre Collection. The 17 volumes include concerts, opera and ballet as well as plays. (see Section 9 Special collections).

Broadley Collection: Index to prints and drawings and autographs. (see Section 9 Special collections).

  • Census: street indexes to enumerators' schedules held on microfilm, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 and 1901; surname index to 1851 census for Westminster. 1881 census surname index for England and Wales.
  • International Genealogical Index (IGI) [Mormon]: London section only.
  • Index to St John's Smith Square marriages 1728-1837, and baptisms 1729-1837.
  • Index to St Martin-in-the-Fields burials at Camden Town 1806-1856.
  • Ratebooks: street indexes giving ward and parish, date of first appearance in the ratebook, and street name and ward boundary changes.
  • St Anne, Soho, vestry minutes, 1695-1742: name, place and subject index.
  • St Margaret and St John bastardy depositions, 1711-1752: index to names, places and trades.
  • "Westminster Calendar of Wills and Administrations 1504-1858." N.B. that although the jurisdiction of the Royal Peculiar of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster extended to 1858, nevertheless there are very few wills after c1770.
