There are a number of ways in which you can explore the holdings of the Archives Centre.

The Archives Catalogue
  • Search WESTCAT
    WESTCAT is the on-line catalogue of Westminster's Archives and Local Studies collections. It is regularly updated. It contains over 3,000 images scanned from our collection and we can supply copies of these images through our Digital imagining and scanning service.

Indexes and finding aids to material in Westminster Archives
  • St Martin-in-the-Fields Settlement index
    A name index to the parish of St Martin-in-the-Fields settlement examination books. Currently covers 1732-1775.
  • Survey of London index
    The Survey of London is an ongoing architectural history of London, published by English Heritage  - not all areas are covered at present. This is an index to Westminster streets which are covered by the Survey.
  • MOTCO
    A project to digitise the Preston Blake Collection is ongoing and can be viewed at Motco. This website also contains a reference database of topographical prints, maps, prospects and panoramas of London.

  • Access to Archives 
    A2A provides access to the catalogues of many English record offices and other depositories. It includes some of the Westminster archives centre collections.
  • Archives Hub
    The Archives Hub is a national gateway providing free access to descriptions of archives and manuscript collections held in UK universities and colleges.
  • Archives Portal
    Archives Portal is the National Archives gateway to archival resources, projects and initiatives in the UK and abroad. You can find descriptions, contact details and web links to a wide range of sources that cover key themes such as the national archive network, digitisation, conservation, collection surveys and professional organisations. The Portal is frequently updated.
  • Artists' Papers Registers
    A location register of the papers of artists, designers and craftspeople held in publicly accessible collections in the United Kingdom and Ireland
  • Clergy of the Church of England Database
    The Clergy of the Church of England Database (CCEd) is documenting the careers of all Church of England clergymen between 1540 and 1835. The website is a developing resource.
  • DocumentsOnline
    Allows you online access to The National Archives' collection of digitised public records, including both academic and family history sources. Includes access to wills, World War I and II medals , Victorian prisoner photographs and the muster rolls to the Battle of Trafalgar. New material is being constantly added.
  • Hospital Records Database
    Information on the existence and location of the records of UK hospitals.
  • National Register of Archives
    Information on the nature and location of manuscripts and historical records that relate to British history held within public collections, colleges and universities and in private hands.

Images and Photographs

  • Collage
    One of the best sources of pictorial material on London history. Its collection includes tens of thousands of prints, drawings, watercolours, maps, photographs, and ephemera.
  • CollectBritain
    This website showcases thousands of items, including images from the British Library.
  • European Visual Archives
    The European Visual Archive (EVA) is a searchable image resource containing historical photographs dating from 1840 up to today.
  • Images of England
    A photographic record of England's 370,000 listed buildings.
  • PhotoLondon
    Highlights and promotes photographic collections in London
  • Viewfinder
    A browsable picture library of historic images from the National Monuments Records archive.
