The council cannot house every homeless person. In particular many single homeless and childless couples will not be accommodated. The hostels and shared accommodation listed* here provide direct access accommodation, which means that you can try to get into the hostel without the help of an agency. You will have to call them to see if there are any vacancies and go through the application procedure.
* The information here is correct at the time of writing. However, hostels review their entry criteria from time to time and so these pages are only a guide.
Hostels are generally for single people so if you are a couple you may have to go to separate hostels. Sometimes you get a single room but more often you will be in shared rooms or dormitories. Toilet and bathroom facilities are usually shared. Most hostels provide a resettlement programme to help residents find more permanent accommodation.
Most hostels charge rent. If you receive Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support or are on a low income you should claim Housing Benefit to help with the cost of this. Service charges for services such as meals, heating and water are not covered by Housing Benefit and so you must pay this from your own income.
You will need to take identification and proof of income with you. At the interview a member of staff will ask you about yourself and tell you about the hostel’s facilities and policies. You will be shown round the hostel and have the chance to ask questions. If you are offered a room you will usually be expected to move in straight away.
The demand for hostel places is very high. Because of the demand, vacancies go quickly and some days there are no vacancies in the whole of London. To get a room you will probably have to make several phone calls.
